Hello C64 From Ebay. Will You Be My PAL?

I finally managed to get my hands on a PAL C64. It came with a light gun, tension adjustable joystick, Datasette, and several games on tape. I have a NTSC/PAL S-Video to VGA converter box, but unfortunately the results were pretty horrible. I'm going to have to get myself a PAL capable monitor ASAP.

Why does it look like that? Did the PAL C64s have a different design, its not that wonderful beige and brown.

In 1986, Commodore changed the outward appearance of the C64 to this "sleeker" design. It's known as the C64C. They made this change worldwide, and I'm not sure if the old breadbin style was produced at all after that point.

That looks like a very clean system - I had both the old breadbox and the newer C64c. My only fear with those old units (including my own) is not so much for the hardware, but the old floppies on magnetic media. Good thing you can find places that sell them or if you have the right setup, use your own PC hard drive to store the .d64 files and access them through an accessory - such as the MMC64 + D64 Reader plugin.

The lifetime of the drives and floppies concern me too. I'm surprised at how long most of my 5 1/4s have lasted. That being said, I've been ripping everything to d64s for safe keeping.
