Apparently the new version of Ubuntu broke compatibility with a lot of wifi adaptors, including some relatively new USB adaptors. If you have upgraded to 9.10 but are having problems seeing and/or connecting to your wireless network you may want to try the following:
1. Open the update manager
2. Click the settings button
3. Click the updates tab
4. Check the “Unsupported updates (karmic-backports)” checkbox
5. Open a terminal and type (and reboot):
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic

Glad I could help! I literally wasted 8 hours or so on this (multiple reinstalls etc...).
Thanks bro for the solution. It nearly caused me a great trouble with my organization
Your the man.. I was also lost till I saw this post..
i am having this issue also, trouble is my laptop also has bluetooth, ubuntu 8.10 works fine, i have now upgraded to 9.10 and it recognises bluetooth but not wifi, even after i done what was said in your post
I had the same problem but found a different work-around. I have a hidden SSID and my HP TC4200 wouldn't connect to it. What I did notice was that the WiFi connection was working as it could see various base stations around me. I then tried rebooting from my USB Stick and found that would connect to the hidden WiFi quite happily.
My guess was that it was some kind of permissions problem, so I re-installed from scratch, made sure I had activated the root password and then immediately did a 'Connect to Hidden Wireless Network'. That still didn't connect but I then edited the profile to provide a fixed IP address for the laptop and a path to the router and DNS. The connection started up and happily survived a reboot.
I hope this helps someone else out there avoid a wasted afternoon. :-)))
Thanks very much, sorted me out too.
My problem seems it will not properly detect my wifi card. Strange because bluetooth seems to work both should be the same card.HP Touchpad Tx2 laptop
